ADHD is considered a “neurodevelopment disorder" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), which is a textbook used by mental health providers to diagnosis clients.
As a neuroaffirming and neurodivergent therapist, I do not see attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as something that needs to be fixed, but instead, I see ADHD as something that needs support.
Through our ADHD therapy service, we can build tangible skills and create workarounds to help you.
Workarounds may look like shifting our thought processes, asking for accommodations at work or school, and shifting our responsibilities at home. Even small shifts can have powerful impacts!
ADHD encapsulates a wide range of symptoms including but not limited to difficulties with attention, challenges with emotional regulation, and challenges with time management.
Many of my clients' experience:
If you experience any of these things, then counseling with me may be the next step in your healing process.
My approach to working with ADHD is rooted in cultivating self-compassion for the times we make mistakes and holding ourselves accountable to the goals we set for ourselves.
Some questions we may explore in therapy include, "How do we be kind to ourselves when we're behind on laundry, and still engage in self-care?" or "How do we accept where we are in life while also working towards the future?" The answer to these questions looks different for everyone, but usually it includes challenging the idea that there's a "right time" to start or a "right way" to do something.
Our work is focused on investigating what works for you, finding out where your capacity is today, and reaching towards growing your capacity at your pace.
My work is focused on meeting people where they're at, breaking down big goals into smaller achievable tasks for the client. Through identifying our values and reorienting ourselves to our values, whether that’s creativity or independence, we can move towards creating a future that feels sustainable for us.
I support adult ADHD, ADHD in children, and throughout the life spectrum for clients in California virtually, and in-person at my Lafayette office.
